PASADENA SPORTFISHING
GROUP

            “HEY”

All meetings open differently but PSG is unique. The reason for that is our meetings are informal with no PSG business discussions. To open the meeting I simply yell HEY and the members yell HEY back.
Its my attention getter as well as a greeting.   I have to open the meeting somehow and HEY does it. I am sure the members have no problem with this and when the members yell back HEY they get everyone to sit up and no one is asleep.

What I hate most about other organizations is when they open their meetings by hitting a gavel on the table and doing the same thing every time they want your attention. That gavel banging is really unnerving.
I really hate it! I don’t like the long dragged out business reports and discussions which generally end up   between two people. I call them REDNECK meetings because when the meeting is over you go home with a red neck and high blood pressure. In some cases you might not want to return to that hassle.
Now you can understand why I start the Pasadena Sportfishing meeting with a HEY. Another thing that is great about this is all the members get involved at the opening of the meeting. Okay, what do you think?
Am I doing it right for PSG? Take a minute or two and give me a
call on 410-439-3474 and let me know I would really appreciate your input.

It’s show time and that means fishermen will be purchasing new lures for the upcoming Rockfish season. There are many custom lures and the most popular are bucktails and parachutes. The lure maker must make their lures attractive to the fishermen because they are the ones who will purchase their product.
Okay! Let’s go buy a few lures. Bucktails and parachutes are made by many lure makers and they all use different materials and colors. Looking for rainbow colors? Just look around and you will find them. Here is what you need to look for if you want a good product. The finished product is covered with different types of paint. The paint comes in vinyl, lacquer, enamel and powder paint. All the paints look great but lacquer and enamel chips very easily (don’t drop it). Powder paint and vinyl are much tougher and do not chip as easily. The only way to tell the difference when looking at the lure is to ask the seller.
The hair is deer hair or nylon artificial hair. Deer hair is mostly used for making bucktails. The nylon hair is mostly used for making parachutes. Bucktails and parachutes are made with   many different heads. There are Ruby lips, spearhead, popeye and many more. They all catch fish but the fisherman picks the head he or she likes best. The hair is tied on the lure with thread and that comes in all sizes (for strength) and colors. Look at the finished lure, is the thread wrapped neatly and tightly? Or, is the thread too thick and a little loose? You don’t want a loose wrap. The thread should have a clear coating so be sure you check to see if that has been done.
The eyes come in all colors and styles. Some are stick on and some are glued and others are painted on. Fishermen seem to like big eyes but that’s their choice. Keep in mind not all bait fish have large eyes such as eels, perch, spot and others.
Another thing is an inexpensive lure is not always a sign of a poorly made lure. It could be the lure maker’s own product and he didn’t have to purchase and resell them. I know lure makers who don’t even fish but their product is very good. The larger custom lure makers farm their work out to helpers for different tasks such as painting and tying. All I can say is be careful when purchasing lures and check the finished product for quality workmanship. Fishermen all have different ideas on what they want to buy and use and that’s what fishing is all about.
My idea of making lures is to keep it simple. For bucktails, I only use white deer hair. I use
ruby lip and spearhead lures in all sizes. I use powder paint because it is highly chip resistant.
I find that the most popular colors are yellow chartreuse and white. I also like school bus yellow.
Coating over the thread is very important that is why I use two to four coats for protection; it all depends on the thickness of the thread. I know there are lures out there with only one coat over the thread. That wrap will not last very long. There are good lure makers and there are others whose work is too shoddy for me. I hope I have informed you enough to make the right choice. Good luck on your future purchase of custom lures.

WHY ME ???

REMEMBER THE BLIZZARD OF 2003 WELL IT WAS ON THE WEEKEND
OF OUR FLEA MARKET/SHOW

It snowed all night Friday and by Saturday morning we were in deep snow. It was so bad there were no vendors set up outside. Snow came down all day but it did not stop the fishermen from coming to the show. Would you believe over 1000 attended the show and who knows where they parked. The snow got deeper and deeper and it snowed all night. Sunday morning the governor declared Maryland in the state of emergency and asked everyone to stay off the roads. The snow was so deep some of the vendors could not make it to the fire hall to pick up their merchandise. The blizzard of 2003 broke a record of 28 inches. Is this what they call global warming? Need to talk to Al ??? about this...

Okay let’s look at 2010 blizzard BLAH another problem. Can you believe two blizzards just days before the flea market/show. Hey this snow broke another Maryland record. On Wednesday before the show the fire hall parking lot was not plowed and it was a mess. Thursday they did plow the lot but it needed much more plowing and in some areas it needed to be hand shoveled. Friday morning a full crew of snow removal equipment worked hard to get as much parking room as possible and they did a great job considering all the heavy snow.

Pasadena sportfishing committee showed up Friday morning to set up the inside and outside tables. Around 1:00 pm some of the inside vendors loaded their tables so they did not have to do it Saturday morning. The committee worked very hard setting up the fence, tables and preparing for the big day. It was cold and lots of work had to be done but the committee guys and gals sure did a great job with a few extra volunteers.

Saturday morning 5:30am the start of the big event. The committee was set and ready to go. When 8:00am came I would guess around 100 or so fishermen was in line and ready to buy. The line was much shorter than in the past but that was due to the weather and parking problem. There were many great deals and bargains as in previous years. The Fire Department volunteers did a great job with the pit beef, turkey, and ham. The women also did a great job in the kitchen despite their food delivery problem (Ellie favors their clam chowder). Sunday was a slower day but Sunday is always a slow day. All the deals were still there except the crowd.  Of course the food was still great. What I see about this Pasadena Sportfishing Flea Market/Show  is a friendly atmosphere where fishermen buy tackle for the opening season and talk fishing with their fishing buddies. Some of the guys meet at the show because they said they just need to get rid of that cabin fever. I look at it this way, the Pasadena Sportfishing Flea Market/Show is just two months away from Rockfish opening day. That means the season is only going to get better. This year mother nature surely put a glitch in Maryland. I will definitely order better weather for next year.  Thanks to all the PSG Committee who worked so hard in making this another success. Milton, John and Keith did an outstanding job shucking the oysters in that real cold weather. (John and Milt also picked up the oysters prior to the big event.) Big thanks to all the fishermen who attended the show and all the vendors who attended and gave us great deals. THANKS EVERYBODY…..

IT SUCKS
I was born in Baltimore and I loved fishing as I do today. My grand father had a summer place on Bodkin Creek known to me as the country; it is where I live today. My half brother was much older than me and on weekends he would take me with him to the country where we would grab a cane pole or two and fish off the pier or fish out of a wooden rowboat. I can still remember the wooden plank rowboat because it always leaked no matter how much caulking material was put in the seams.
Yellow perch (two at a time) was no problem and the same with white perch. We would catch all the grass shrimp we needed in a matter of minutes. My mother purchased my first spinning reel from Montgomery Wards and my first lure was a June Bug spinner. Boy that sure changed the way I would fish and it was a lot more fun. As a teenager I would grab my fishing rod and catch a street car that would take me to Back River and many other local fishing areas.
Anyway throughout my early years of fishing it was fun and not too expensive.
Today many changes have taken place in fishing as well as crabbing. You need a boat license, a permit, a fishing license and now a federal permit just to fish in the bay. On top of it all you are limited to how many fish you can have, the size of your catch and the time of day you can fish. Want to go crabbing? You need a crabbing license or pay a fine. Need to launch your boat? There are fees for using a boat ramp unless you live in a development with a community
boat ramp.
What is this world coming to? Retract that, what the HELL is happening to our great American way of life...
